当大的小行星体或慧星撞击月球表面时,其表面物质的喷射可以达到逃逸月球的速度(2.4km/s)从而进入宇宙空间,其中一部分为地球所捕获并降落到地球上,这表明月球陨石与月球表面的冲击成坑事件密切相关,特别是大的小行星体低角度撞击更有利于喷射物质的逃逸。由于月球经过岩浆分异作用,所以月球陨石属无球粒陨石。2

发现历史和数量

月球陨石的发现开始于20世纪80年代。在Apollo和Luna计划采样返回10年之后,于1982年才确认第一块月球陨石ALHA 81005。这块陨石是美国陨石考察队(ANSMET)在南极Alan Hill山区发现的,该陨石样品被送往美国休斯顿空间中心进行处理和保管,由于该中心负责月球样品处理和保管,研究人员熟悉月球样品,他们在处理该样品时发现其结构特征与月球样品非常相似,而促使他们考虑到ALHA 81005陨石可能来自月球。其实,在此样品之前,日本南极考察队在Yamato发现了一块月球陨石Y791197,由于当时缺乏经验,这块陨石被误认为是钙长辉长无球粒陨石(Eucrite)。据确认时间顺序,Y791197、Y82192和Y82193分别是第二、三、四块月球陨石。此外,Y793169和EET87521陨石曾被误认为是钙长辉长无球粒陨石,后来被确认为月球陨石。1

月球陨石稀少,发现过程非常缓慢。到1993年,才发现12块月球陨石,而且主要来自南极,南极之外仅在澳大利亚发现一块Calcalong Creek。到2000年,月球陨石数量达到了31块,同样,绝大部分来自于南极。由于Calcalong Creek陨石曾在市场上标价4万美元/g,这激发了民间陨石爱好者对月球陨石的极大兴趣,到1997年,在南极以外发现了第二块月球陨石。2000年之后,民间在非洲沙漠地区寻找月球陨石取得了巨大成功,月球陨石数量和质量也随着飙升。至2013年,已公布发现月球陨石165个,总重量65.2kg,如考虑成对陨石,这些陨石代表了81次陨石降落,其中10个月海玄武岩、50个斜长岩、21个玄武质斜长质混合角砾岩。在数量上,32(块(成对19块)月球陨石发现于南极,其他148块发现于南极之外的沙漠地区。在数量上,沙漠月球陨石占月球陨石的绝大部分。1

岩石类型

由于缺乏大气层的保护,月球在历史上经历了强烈的撞击作用,因此,月球上布满了大大小小的撞击坑,同时,在月球表面形成了一层数米至20多米厚度不等的月壤。与此相似,月球陨石除少量具有完整结晶结构玄武岩外,其余大部分月球陨石均为碎屑岩。根据岩石结构和矿物组合,月球陨石可分为玄武岩、斜长岩和玄武岩-斜长岩质混合角砾岩等三类,这与月球岩石的月海玄武岩、高地斜长岩和过渡地区的混合角砾岩相对应。另外,根据岩石学和化学成分特征,月球陨石主要有三种端元类型物质组成,即角砾岩化斜长岩、玄武岩和角砾岩化玄武岩、苏长岩成分的冲击熔融玻璃即月球岩石中的克里普岩。1
